Install XFCE on FreeBSD

Last update: 11.04.2021

XFCE is a desktop environment based on the GTK + libraries used by GNOME.

It takes up less memory and provides a simple, efficient and easy-to-use desktop. Xfce is fully configurable and has a program bar with menus, applets and a program launcher. Also, a file manager and a sound manager are included and the program can be customized using themes. Because it is fast, light and efficient, Xfce is ideal for older or slower computers with little memory.

To install the XFCE package we enter:

root #: pkg install xfce

Xfce uses D-Bus as a message bus. The component is automatically installed as a dependency on Xfce. To start D-Bus when the system is booting we run the following:

root #: service dbus enable

In contrast to GNOME or KDE, Xfce does not have its own login manager. We'll be using Slim instead.

So that Xfce can be used under Slim, we add the following line to .xinitrc.

root #: nano .xinitrc =>

./usr/local/etc/xdg/xfce4/xinitrc
